Hello! Did you sleep at all last night? Or were you too busy reading some of the bushels of books you had gotten yesterday and Monday to pay any attention to such things as time? Were you reading with the blankets over your head by the light of a flashlight? Or did you just forget to go home at all and stayed reading by the bonfire all night? I think someone was there last night. If I find you sleeping on one of the benches today, I’ll know you didn’t get enough sleep!
But perhaps you would like to start off the day with a piece of our blue ribbon winner Upside Down Apple Pie. I think there are a few slices left in the kitchen. And yes, help yourself to hot chocolate, coffee, tea, cider–it’s all in the kitchen. I think we need to make some cookies for tomorrow. What kind would you like?
Now, let’s get started since we have a lot of books to share with you today.
Biography
- The Family Nobody Wanted (Oh, I love this book! It takes place after WWII and the couple want a child. So they adopt Donny. Then they want a girl, but end up with two. Once child follows the another as Donny wants a brother his size, but they can’t find one, or turn away the rejected children who need homes either. Written by the mother, you’ll laugh over mishaps, chuckle over the things the kids say, feel the tears start over some things, and fall in love with this family. I just have to go read this again. Sorry, I’ll be back when I’ve finished. . . .)
- Guinness of Honan (Written by Mrs. Howard Taylor (daughter-in-law of Hudson Taylor) about her brother, G. Whitfield Guinness who was a missionary in the Honana Province of China. Wow! You’ll just have to read it.)
- The Small Woman (For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved the story of Gladys Aylward. After reading every book I could find about her, I decided that this was the best one.)
- The Life of D. L. Moody (I’m not sure what inspired me to read this book so long ago. It was the first thick biography that I had read, and it gave me a desire to read others. Written by Mr. Moody’s son, it was full of interesting information and well told.)
- Rickenbacker (Sure, maybe you can fly if you try riding your bike off the barn roof. Rickenbacker tried, and he became one of America’s Aces in WWI. And he flew during WWII though not as a fighter pilot. His story is incredible, fascinating, and sometimes unbelievable.)
Fantasy Girls
I know, I know, I was supposed to list Fantasy books. Only problem? I don’t read Fantasy books. And I was informed that Pilgrim’s Progress and Winnie the Pooh didn’t count. So, I opted to use my “you choose” genre and give you my Top 5 Girls books. Now, these don’t mean that boys can’t and won’t like them, it just means they are probably going to be more interesting for girls.
- Mag and Margaret (One worked for her living and knew nothing of Jesus Christ until a boarder gave her a book. The other is the loved and petted daughter of an officer in the navy and hasn’t any use for Christ.)
- Star Spangled Summer (A delightful story about an army family living at an army base in Kansas in the late 30’s. This is the first in a fun series about the Perrish family.)
- The Precious Days (What would you think if you had spent most of your life traveling around the world in a converted Chinese boat with your parents, brother and sister? Would you think life in America was strange and different? The Campbell girls do! And yet, they love it. This is the first book in the series about this delightful, yet different family.)
- Dark Sunshine (Blythe Hyland would have loved living on the farm, except that she was crippled by polio. But even that didn’t stop her when she fell in love with a wild mare trapped by a landslide.)
- Pollyanna Grows Up (If you’ve ever wondered what happened to Pollyanna after the first book ended, here’s your chance to find out. A lovely read.)

I don’t read that many Biographies, or Fantasy either, I suppose. The Chronicles of Narnia are the only really good fantasy I can think of at the moment. I’ve never truthfully read them to myself, but they were read to me many times throughout my childhood. 🙂
You should try reading “The Family Nobody Wanted.” It doesn’t read like a “regular” biography. 🙂

Oh, good! I hope you find them both enjoyable. 🙂 My mom, sister, best friends and I all used to read “The Family Nobody Wanted” over and over. I haven’t read it in years, but I still remembered 9 of the 12 kids names. 🙂
I don’t particularly like reading fantasy, either! Although I have read the Chronicles of Narnia, The Hobbit, and half of The Lord of the Rings. (the first book and half of the second 😛 ) In my opinion, those are exceptions, because they are Biblical allegories. I don’t believe I’ve read many biographies, either. I’ve read John Bunyan: Tinker of Bedford, and probably something else. I don’t remember; I’ve read too many books! 😛

Oh, did you find “The Family Nobody Wanted” at the library? It used to be so hard to find it because it wasn’t in print any more. But it’s been reprinted in the last 10 years or so, I think.
Thank you so much for sharing biography and girls books! I don’t read any fantasy either, so to see some different “options” if you will, is a blessing! Mag and Margaret, Precious Days and Star Spangled Summer sound like fun reads! How would you rate the length of those three books?
They are all novel length, and I’m guessing that “Precious Days” is the shortest, though it isn’t short. 🙂
