HitH – Tour #5

May 31, 2019 by readanotherpage 2 Comments

What is the setting for Hymns in the Hills?

Obviously there are hills involved. 🙂 But what hills? Though I don’t say specifically, and you are welcome to set it anywhere, when I was writing this book, the hills in my mind were located nearby in the Ozark Mountains. (Don’t think rugged peeks or snowy slopes. Think rolling hills and lots of ’em.)

This setting also lent itself to the way the characters talk. There is dialect in this book. Fact is, if’n it weren’t fer that dialect, y’all wouldn’t see the difference ‘tween Belle and her relations all that much. 😉 And you wouldn’t notice the change that begins to take place.

Some of the words I used, like creek, are how we talk around here. In other parts of the country the dialect is different and that small stream of water might become a “crik” or something else.

While it was somewhat of a challenge to write the dialect in a way that was readable, it was also fun to hear them speaking in my head. I’m thankful for beta-readers who were able to point out spelling inconsistencies for me!

Yes, it was fun to read the dialect! I think it added more personality to the book. 🙂
