I think it’s time to branch out into some longer books. Today’s book is one that still makes me smile (and think) though it was written for a younger age group. 🙂
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
3.5 stars
This is a story from my childhood. It brings back so many memories of my mom reading it aloud to my siblings and me. Told in first person by a girl, it narrates a different kind of Christmas pageant–one filled with Herdmans. (“The Herdmans were absolutely the worst kids in the history of the world.”)It certainly gives a fresh perspective on the characters of the Christmas story.
I still quote lines from this book now and then and, while I don’t read it every year, it is fun to read now and then.
Warning: There are two uses of the Lord’s name in vain by Herdmans. They treat it as wrong, but it’s still there unless you white them out like I do. This would be the only reason for hesitating to recommend it to others.
Since my readers are all older, I don’t mind sharing this book with you. My mom never read those words aloud, and I don’t think I even knew they were there for years. Have you ever read this book? I think there’s a movie of it too, but I don’t remember if I’ve ever seen it.

I’ve heard of this book, but I’ve never read it. I’ll check it out!
It’s quite different than a “normal” Christmas book. 🙂
It’s a great book. My church did a play of it several years ago that I participated in.
How fun! 🙂 Who were you in the play?
This is one of my favorite Christmas books! My mom reads it aloud every year. 🙂
Aw, how fun! 🙂 Such special memories. I’m sure you can quote lines too. 😉
I’d never read this story until last month, but it was such a fun one with a sweet message! I’m going to see a theater production of the story tonight. 🙂
Oh, have fun! 🙂 Yes, it does have a good message.
