Good morning! Glad you were able to make it back to the Literary Lodge today! Boy, do we have books for you today!
You may need to grab one of those empty bushel baskets that are by the kitchen door today because of all the books we’re going to share with you. I wonder how many of you will disappear out on the lake in one of the boats, or in the barn with only a stack of books beside you today. Perhaps you can find an empty bench not too far from the Lodge to browse through your stack of books. Sorry, the baskets on the bikes will only hold so many books, but if you wear a backpack too, you can take more along. When I checked the weather, there were clouds moving in, and they might bring cooler weather, so this afternoon might be a good time to move closer to the bonfire or take a blanket with you if you are headed out to explore.
If you are new here, let me give you a quick tour before you go running off. Each of the participating blogs/party rooms, have their own Top 5 books to share. The buttons to read these rooms are down below. But one of them is going to give a FREE short story to anyone who wants it! It’s the Books room, and somewhere on their post they’ll share the link to it.
But don’t forget to visit all the other rooms and comment, follow, sign up, etc. because that’s going to earn you more entries into the amazing giveaway we are offering! It’s so good that we all wish we could enter it ourselves.
There are too many book to share to keep you standing there, so here are my Top 5 books in today’s genre. If you wish to add a book to your TBR (To Be Read) list on Goodreads, or just read more about the book, find the link on Amazon, or whatever, click on the book image.
Series
The Chautauqua Series by Isabella Alden
An 8 book series
Written by my favorite author of all times, these series follows four friends from their very first trip to Chautauqua where, instead of just having a lark, they find Christ, through life. Sometimes there was sorrow and difficulties, other times laughter and joy. The final book takes the four girls, now mothers and grandmothers, back to meetings of Chautauqua. Some of the books were harder to read because of what was going on, but others I absolutely love! Highly recommended.
Grandma’s Attic by Arleta J. Richardson
A 10 book series+ A Christmas book
I imagine that most of you have read these delightful series. The first books start out with stories of “GrandmaβMabel” when she was a girl. As Mabel and her best friend, Sarah Jane, grow older, the books change from short stories, to a full book told by Mabel. Always full of laughter and maybe a few tears, these books are loved by young and old alike.
The Moody Family by Sarah Maxwell
An 11 book series (including the Christmas book)
There is not much that is really exciting about this series, but who needs excitement when you have Mitch and his brother and sisters? This series covers two normal years of the Moody family who are an average homeschool family living in Kansas. They do things that other families do. Relationships between the siblings, and their parents is sweet, and I enjoy reading the books.
Bret King Mysteries by Dan Scott
A 9 book series
You want a bit of excitement? Mysteries and good, western fun? You want a family that enjoys and looks out for each other? Let me introduce you to Bret King and his family. We first came across one of these books at a thrift store and picked it up. We were hooked. They are full of fun and mystery, but the kids are not smarter than the police, the parents are not ignored, and friends all watch out for each other. The series is set in New Mexico and take place in the late 1950s to early 1960s.
Danny Orlis by Bernard Palmer
Over 70 books in the series
This is by far the longest series I’ve ever seen. Each book is fairly short. The series start when Danny is in his early teens. Most of the early books involve a mystery, as well as excellent Biblical advice woven into the story. As Danny grows older, he falls in love, gets married and the stories continue. Many of the later books (after Danny is grown) are about the day to day struggles of living a Christian life in the midst of temptations and struggles from worldly friends. There has been only one book that I got rid of because if felt like it was giving too much information about sin. There is also a spin-off series of 4-6 books about Danny’s adopted twin siblings.
And now, here are the buttons to take you to the party rooms! Have fun and don’t forget to leave comments, add books to your TBR list and enter the giveaway! Oh, and these will open in a new tab, so don’t worry, you won’t get lost in the acres of land around the Literary Lodge.
I will be sharing a downloadable pdf on Saturday with ALL the Top 5 books shared this week, so be sure you come back for it.

I believe I’ve read one of the Danny Orlis books, but none of the others. The Isabella Alden series looks good! π
readanotherpage says
The Isabella Alden series is good! You should get it and read it.
So you’ve read one Danny Orlis, huh? How fun. So many books to read!
CutePolarBear says
You’ve talked about Isabella Alden so much, so I’m interested in her, and then I discovered the she’s Grace Livingston Hill’s aunt! How cool is that? Now I’m really interested in reading her books, and the series you suggested looks amazing!
CutePolarBear
P.S. If I already have a book added to my ‘to-read’ on Goodreads, or even ‘read’, could I count that as ‘Add five ___’ for the giveaway? I haven’t had to do that yet, as I am finding many interesting new books, but I was wondering.
readanotherpage says
If you haven’t read it, you can count it, but not if you have read it.
Isabella Alden is the one who got Grace Livingston Hill started on writing. You really should check out Isabella Alden’s books. They are worth reading and re-reading.
CutePolarBear says
Okay, thanks! π
Isn’t that so cool? And now they’re both famous authors. I assume you like Isabella Alden’s books better, but since I haven’t read any of hers yet, I favor G. L. Hill. π
readanotherpage says
I do like Isabella Alden’s books better because the spiritual content was deeper. She also wrote about real people. Most, if not all, of her stories are based on real people that she knew, only she changed the names and such. She was a pastor’s wife.
CutePolarBear says
Oh, that sounds so cool and amazing! Kind of like what I do (except, with my Heritage Diaries series, I don’t change the names). Now I REALLY want to read one. π
readanotherpage says
They’re good. I’m hoping to have a post up about Isabella Alden on the 17th, so come back for it. π
Sarah Holman says
Grandma’s Attic was a favorite of mine growing up. I read it at least four times.

Grandma’s Attic is just so much fun! π

Here’s my review of βLetter of Loveβ by Amanda Teroβanother top favroite Indie Author book!! :
I simply loooved this story. It had all the drama and imagination-sparking I love. π The end was sobering but perfect. The doctrine was very sound and I liked the part about the thieves on the cross. 5+ stars.
Favorite quote: βSeems like God has given you another chance at life. You wouldn’t have made it if it wasn’t for your friend Henry.β
βToo…β Edward choked the words out, βLate.β
βYou’re not dying yet.β
βI’ve… rejected… Him.β
βBut you’re still breathing. You still have time to turn to Him today.β
*surrounding descriptions cut out for briefness*
Favorite beautiful sentence [as in, well-worded]: β. . . coughs stealing words from him.β
Humourous quote: βThey say a bad storm’s coming.”
Edward shuffled into the house, leaning heavily on the arm Henry offered. “You don’t say,” he muttered. He didn’t need some high-educated individual to tell him that the wind and snow were picking up.β

Great review.

I’ve heard of the Moody Family series. I should read one of the books in the series soon. π
Crystal says
By the way, I’m glad you are putting together a list of what everyone recommends! (Sorry if I already mentioned this previously, I’m just so happy!)
readanotherpage says
I’m glad I’m making a list too. π I can’t keep track of what everyone is sharing.
readanotherpage says
They are wonderful! You should get one and try it.
Kate Willis says
You’re right! I haven’t read most of these. π
readanotherpage says
I figured not. π I guess you’ll have more books to read since I’m sure your TBR list was really low.
Holly Ciampi says
High fives on Grandma’s Attic! I’ve read the Moody Family series. I enjoyed them much better when I was younger though. The Chautauqua Series looks good! Great list!
readanotherpage says
*Returns high five* You should try the Chautauqua series! I’m starting the first book again, and remembering how much I love it. π
Kelsey Bryant says
Great list! I’ve read books by Isabella Alden, but not the Chautauqua series. Sounds like I need to! I’ve read one of the Grandma’s Attic books and really enjoyed it; I didn’t realize there were that many more. I’ve heard of the Moody family series and they sound fun; the last two are new to me! Wow, 70 books in the Danny Orlis series, all about the same person? They sound quite good!
readanotherpage says
Yes! You should read the Chautauqua series!
Grandma’s Attic goes until she’s married with kids. π So much fun to read.
I thought the last two might be new. π The Danny Orlis series starts when he’s a boy, and then goes on from there. The last ones I have he’s married with three adopted kids (triplets) who are in their teens. They were originally published by Moody Press.
Kaylee says
Here is my review of Emmeline by Sarah Holman who is one of my favorite authors.

I’ve read some of the Grandma’s Attic series, but I don’t think all of them. I remember loving them, though. There are some great stories and funny too! I love it when series are long. Have you ever read anything by Al and Joanna Lacy? Their series are usually long.
readanotherpage says
Yes, long series are fun if the writer can keep the story going. π
No, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of Al and Joanna Lacy. What do they write?
Bethany R. says
The Grandma’s Attic and the Moody series are such sweet stories. I really enjoyed those.

Kellyn Roth says
I’ve never read a single one of those series … so I guess more books for me!

Oh, Kellyn! Your education is lacking. You must remedy the situation with all speed. π
Kellyn Roth says
Well, actually, I guess I’ve read the first book in the Grandma’s Attic series, sooo? π

I LOVE the Grandma’s Attic series!!!
And the Bret King Mysteries… I’m always on the lookout for more westerns to read, so I’ll have to check them out, they sound great!! π
readanotherpage says
Another Grandma’s Attic fan! π
Yes, the Bret King mysteries are fun, exciting and a delight to read. The first ones aren’t usually too expensive.
Abigail P. says
I think mostly historical fiction. I have read their Hannah of Fort Bridger series (about a woman who goes out West with her family) and their Mail Order Bride series. I think they are both ten books long. I remember enjoying them when I was younger. It’s been a while since I read them, though.
readanotherpage says
Oh, thanks for sharing. I may have to check them out.

They’re all worth the reading. π
Liberty says
The Danny Orlis series has over SEVENTY books in it? Oh my………….
Grandma’s Attic goes all the way to when she is married? We only have the little kid series then…….We should get the other ones.
How many books is in it?
Thank for hosting this Rebekah! It has been so much fun so far!
π
readanotherpage says
Yes, Grandma’s Attic goes past when she’s just a girl. And the other books are full stories, not just short stories. π There are 6 books after the 4 when she’s a little girl. And then there is a Christmas book that has different Christmas stories in it from her life. Some are from the books, others are not.
Liberty Bluebelle says
Hi, Rebekah! I’ve read/listened to a lot of Isabella Alden, but not the Chatauqua series. Down on my list it goes. At last year’s party, you recommended “The Brown’s at Mt. Hermon”, and I listened to it shortly after the party–very fun, encouraging book, that one was. =) I’ve read Grandma’s Attic, some of the Moody’s, and quite a few Danny Orliss ones too. I think my favorite Danny Orliss was Danny Orliss in the Canadian Wilderness, (I think) where he and Ronny are helping someone with special film get pictures or video of the wildlife. I picked up a whole bunch of them at a massive book sale for a dollar a bag of books. =D That was before I’d ever heard of them. I just added Bret King to my list too. Thanks!

Yes, add Chautauqua to your list. π And you’ve got Danny Orlis! π Yes, that one was a fun one. I would love to go to a book sale like that! Just think of how many books I could get! π
Liberty Bluebelle says
How many books could you get? Too many!!!! =D I started listening to Four Girls at Chataqua, and right in the first meeting, the one Marian and Flossie go to, they mentioned my favorite fiction book! Mr. Eggleston was one of the speakers, and Marian referred to him as the man who wrote the book “The Hoosier Schoolmaster”, the book they read aloud at seminary. That was fun to hear!
=D

Now that’s fun! π Are you listening to it from Librivox? If so, just know that when you come to “Ruth Erskine’s Son” the reader is reading from our book. π We actually sent her three books, I think so she could record them because they weren’t on Gutenburg.
Liberty Bluebelle says
Whoa! Thanks for that bit of information. That’s fun!

Amanda Tero says
Those stories though!! π Some of them… π π I was NOT that type of child. π

π I was probably a mixture of Mable and Sarah Jane. π I was the leader of my best friends, but we never did anything like those two! We were more into climbing trees, and riding bikes and roller skating, or pretending all sorts of things. π
Have you read the full series, or just the short stories when they were young?
Amanda Tero says
I think I read the entire series. At least, the ones where she got married and all that? I was likely more Sarah Jane, from remembering correctly. π But yeah… never got into their kind of trouble. π
readanotherpage says
I never did either, but if I’d lived back then, I might have. π
Yes, the books when she gets married. Those are fun. And she didn’t get into so much trouble! Well, it was a different sort. π

Haha! True… π
