Welcome back to the Literary Lodge! Our Five Fall Favorites party is underway! Come on in. Of course you aren’t too late!
It’s a beautiful morning here at the Literary Lodge! The sun is shining from a clear, blue sky. The trees are aflame with colors! I don’t know if you’ll want any blankets today, or will even want to be close to the bonfire until evening. I walked down to the boats this morning and they are bobbing up and down, just waiting for someone to take them away from shore. Be sure to take some books along, or someone to talk about books with. We fixed that flat tire on one of the bikes, so they should all be ready to go again. We have a few bushels of apples in the kitchen ready to be turned into something yummy, so if you want, go lend a hand. There’s probably several cookbooks you can browse through in there too. When you need a break, grab a backpack for a stroll through the woods to the barn and enjoy some quiet reading time.
Now, before you run off to some party room, let me give you a quick tour. (Of course, if you’ve already been here before, you can skip this and jump right into my books.) Each of the participating blogs/party rooms, have their own Top 5 books to share. The buttons to read these rooms are down below. But one of them is going to give a FREE short story to anyone who wants it! It’s the Books room, and somewhere on their post they’ll share the link to it.
But don’t forget to visit all the other rooms and comment, follow, sign up, etc. because that’s going to earn you more entries into the amazing giveaway we are offering! It’s so good that we all wish we could enter it ourselves.
Here are my Top 5 books in today’s genre. If you wish to add a book to your TBR (To Be Read) list on Goodreads, or just read more about the book, find the link on Amazon, or whatever, click on the book image.
Clean, Christian Romance
Um, I don’t read much in the way of romance, so I decided to change my genre today. 🙂 I’m going to do
Historical Non-Fiction
Reminisce Books by Reminisce Magazine
What do you wish to read about? Motor cars? The 1930s? WWII? What schools were like, or what folks ate? It’s all in one Reminisce book or another. I was going to try to pick just one, but that’s just impossible. Each book is full of photos, stories and memories of an era now behind us. If you are writing a story set in the early to mid 1900s, get some Reminisce books. Or if you are just interested in history, these will keep you laughing, and reading.
The Good Years by Walter Lord
The glittering age of prosperity! These are the years before the first World War. The age of progress, of absurd parties, of the Great White Fleet, and the Golden Circus. It was also the time of the great San Francisco earthquake, the race to the Pole, and battle for women’s rights. Told in Walter Lord’s fascinating style, this book will give you stories little known.
Note of caution, I did use the whiteout here and there. Mostly for quotes.
Lonely Vigil by Walter Lord
I had no idea that there were men who dared risk their lives by staying on the islands captured by the Japanese, so that they could broadcast and alert the allied forces when the enemy was coming. Hunted day and night by the Japanese, not sure if the natives would betray them, these men provided valuable information to the allied forces during the battles in the Pacific. I had a hard time putting it down.
You might want to be careful and watch out for some language as Walter Lord quotes others and doesn’t edit what they say. But it is well worth reading.
Fighting the Flying Circus by Eddie Rickenbacker
I had known that Eddie Rickenbacker was an Ace in WWI, but I really didn’t know much about him. Until I read his book. Full of stories of his early life, his flying and what fighting in the skies in those early years was like, this book kept me reading. If you or someone you know likes planes, read this book.
Miracles and Mysteries by Mary Ann Monnon
When I was doing research for my first book, I came across some Halifax history I’d never heard of. The December 6, explosion of 1917. I quickly found some books about it and–wow! I’ve never read anything quite like this. The stories of God’s protecting hand during this incredible disaster are nothing short of miraculous. The author of this book had first hand accounts to tell as her father was one of the survivors.
And now, here are the doors to take you to the party rooms! Have fun and don’t forget to leave comments, add books to your TBR list and enter the giveaway! And yes, these will open in a new tab, so don’t worry, you won’t get lost in the vast acres of land around the Literary Lodge.
Oh, one more thing before you rush off!
If you are wishing you had a list of all these books, make sure you stop by on Saturday because I’ll have a pdf download for you with Everyone’s Top 5 books in every genre to give you!

Miracles and Mysteries is definitely being added to my TBR. As well as the Reminisce books.

Oh, good! There is another book I have about the Halifax explosion, but I think I like Miracles and Mysteries best. 🙂 But they were both good. And yes! Get some Reminisce books! You can sometimes find them on Amazon for $.99 + shipping. 😉

Those Reminisce books sound like something I need! Is the picture just an example of them, and are there more 1900’s books that I should check out?

The picture is just one of the many books they have! I have over a dozen different titles and they are all different. You can often find some really cheap on Amazon.
CutePolarBear says
I see! I’ll probably buy one or two when I next make a purchase from Amazon. 🙂 They look so helpful for research purposes!
readanotherpage says
They’re also great for just reading. 🙂 And story ideas . . . 😉
CutePolarBear says
Haha, I believe it. Not that I don’t have enough, but…
Faith Potts says
I haven’t read any of these books, but the Reminsce books look like they’d be awesome for research! 😀
readanotherpage says
Yes, they are great for research because the stories are from real people who lived during that time. They have real pictures, and you might laugh and cry while reading just one book as the stories very so much.
Bethany R. says
I actually haven’t read any of these books. Thanks for recommending!! 🙂 Love 5 Fall Favorites!!
readanotherpage says
My pleasure! Hope you get a “few” new books to read this fall and winter. 🙂 Or maybe a few more than a few. 😉
Glad you love this party. We do too!
Elle | Her Steps in His Story says
I’ve read quite a few of these books!
readanotherpage says
How fun! It’s always nice to hear of someone else who has read the same books. 🙂 Thanks for coming by!
RebekahAshleigh says
I actually have not read any of these before. This party is definitely making my list of books to read grow! 😉
readanotherpage says
I know what you mean! My list is growing too. 🙂 Oh, what to read first!
Abigail P. says
These all look so great! I love history and researching times past, especially through autobiographies.
readanotherpage says
I agree! Real stories told by the people who actually lived them are so much fun!
Olivia Bell (aka Livy) says
Hi Rebekah!
So, I had trouble yesterday with the rafflecopter… super sorry, I accidentally put I had commented on The Destiny of One in the 5 blogs part and then hit enter, and then when i tried to fix it I made the same mistake and even put that in the other 5 blog visits!!! I am SO sorry! But, today the rafflecopter says I have one entry from saying my fav book this year, so is there no problem then? I meant to say yesterday that I commented on yours, the Destiny of One and Noble Novels for participating blogs and for a different blog, I didn’t get 5 but I commented on Madigrace.org. So, will those count still? I’m so sorry for the mix up! I’ll make sure not to do that again!
readanotherpage says
As long as you let me know here (which you just did) I can make it work. 🙂 Thanks for letting me know.
Olivia Bell (aka Livy) says
Oh, and never mind about the Madigrace.org one, I just realized you meant 5 other participating blogs. Sorry! I’m all figured out now, hehe! 😀
readanotherpage says
No problem. 🙂
Olivia Bell (aka Livy) says
I did five today, but couldn’t get five more, but I did one, I commented on Noble Novels!
readanotherpage says
That’s great! If you find time to comment on the last 4, you’ll have commented on all 10 today! 🙂
Olivia Bell (aka Livy) says
Well I tried, but some of them don’t have the Name/URL option for commenting so I don’t have a way to comment. 🙁
readanotherpage says
Hmm, let me check into that. Which ones can you not comment on? There might be some other way you can do it, or they might be able to set something up.
Olivia Bell (aka Livy) says
They were Whimsical Writings For His Glory and Kelsey’s Notebook. I run into that problem a lot, it seems not everyone uses the name/url option, thank you for trying to fix it! 😀
readanotherpage says
Okay, if you have a wordpress account, you can sign in using that. Or you can try the OpenID option and see if that works. Let me know what happens.

Here is my review for ‘Journey to Love’ by Amanda Tero—one of my favroite Indie Author books!:
I can’t begin to say how much I loved this book!! Marie’s character was wholly accurate, the whole book through (ei, she never turned extrovert from being introvert). I thought she was remarkably well done. I LOVED Mark and Edward, and Mr. Bowles, and Miss Summers a little, but the other characters were not particularly endearing to me, especially Mary. I found her a bit “too good” and somewhat preachy. I also found the dialogues between Mary and Marie a bit confusing, as it was hard to keep the names straight sometimes. But I GREATLY enjoyed the plot and the drama (Edward’s desertion and Marie’s sorrow).
The doctrine was sound, although I wasn’t quite sure while reading Marie’s prayer if she was actually asking for salvation, and she didn’t announce her profession of faith very clearly, to me. But that’s only a personal feeling. I just have never heard that way of asking for salvation. Also, I was a bit puzzled by the fact that after Marie got saved, the worry about her parents having died unsaved was not discussed again.
I enjoyed the many nature descriptions, which were very pretty.
I found no typos, but I was annoyed by the fact that sometimes apostrophes were of a different shape.
I was delighted to read the epilogue!! It was so awesome!!!!!
This book made me eager from the next book in the series and especially for “Letter of Love”. 5 stars.
Favorite quote: “For a short moment, Marie relived her life in the past year. The Lord had used even the hardships she had faced to help her realize one thing: no matter what, the Lord loved her. She looked up at Mr. Bowles with a smile. “I suppose He was watching over me the whole time and even led me here, just so I could learn more about Him.”
Favorite beautiful sentence [as in, well-worded]: “She tried shaking the thought from her mind as they walked from the church building to the wagon, but still, it circled behind her conscious thoughts.”
Favorite humorous quote: “Get ya some learnin’ and we’ll set ya on readin’. We both would’ve loved t’ read. Miss that most of all, I reckon. So I reckon you’ll like it best of all.” Maybe that is what Mrs. Bowles “reckoned,” but perhaps she should have kept her “reckoning” to herself. Words crowded together on the page for Marie, making every word seem a mile long, every page the length of the United States, and every book. . . Marie stopped before she exhausted herself.”

Great review! Thanks for sharing it!

I haven’t heard of any of these. Will be checking them out! I’m glad you’ll be putting together a list of every blogger’s favorite books because it’s a little tricky for me, going back and forth between each blog. 🙂
readanotherpage says
Glad to share new books! 🙂 Yes, I visit all the other blogs, but it’s hard to remember what books were shared. The list will have the books divided by genre and person.

Hi, Rebekah! I liked how you started this post off–“Of course you aren’t too late.” I didn’t make it to the party yesterday, so now I get to catch up today. =D
I’ve got “We Had Everything But Money”! Great for story ideas and just enjoying learning about other people. I like keeping my eyes open for books like that. =)
Lonely Vigil and Miracles and Mysteries both went on my TBR list. =)
Thanks for the recommendations!

🙂 It’s never too late at the Literary Lodge. At least not when it comes to finding new books! 😀
If you ever find any other of the Reminisce books, get them. They are all just as much fun to read. Even the one all about cars. (I’m not a very car-interested person.)
Glad you added books to your list. I’m always happy when I can recommend books to others. Hope you can make it to the rest of the party!

Five more books I’ve not read! The reminiscence books looks so neat!!
