Top 5, Giveaway & Blog Hop – Childhood Favorites

October 4, 2019 by readanotherpage 36 Comments

No, you’re not too late! Come join the fun!

It really got cold again today! That wind is hinting at long winter evenings curled up beside a fire with stacks of books to read while the snow falls softly outside. But don’t worry, there’s no snow in the forecast here. Just cold enough weather so one of the blankets wrapped around you will be perfect. But if you want to be more active and really warm up, head out on one of the bikes, or row one of the boats to the other side of the lake. Do you have your backpacks filled with books yet? I know I do! I may have to use one of the bushel baskets from the orchard. Do you want one too? I hear there are delightful gatherings in the barn this week. All sorts of talks about books and favorite characters. You might want to check it out. There are benches scattered around if you feel like reading with just nature to keep you company. And don’t forget the bonfire. There are stacks of logs over there so feel free to sit around the warm blaze even if it isn’t evening. I think I’ll come join you. Anyone want some s’mores?

If you haven’t been here before, the giveaway is down below, and so are the buttons to the other party rooms. Be sure to visit them all as there are some great books being recommended, and one of them is offering a FREE kindle book!

Just a reminder, if we reach 75 people entered into the giveaway, we’ll add a 2nd place winner, so be sure to invite your friends!

Childhood Favorites

Childhood favorites. Do you have books that just bring back memories from your childhood? I do. It was rather hard to decide just which books to share since I’ve shared some of my favorite childhood books before in other years (under different genres), but here are 5 more.

Baby's Birthday

Baby’s Birthday by Eloise Wilkin

I loved this story growing up! Part of it was the adorable pictures, but part of it was because Baby’s family was just like mine! I even looked a little like that baby and have a big brother and a big sister. So it was always “Baby Bekah” who was having the birthday. πŸ™‚ It’s a simple, but adorable story, and I would recommend it to any little one.

Nancy Plays Nurse

Nancy Plays Nurse by Diane Sherman

I was in love with all things nursing when I was young, so this book was an instant favorite. Nancy is a little girl who wants to be a nurse and is always playing nurse with her dolls and stuffed animals. I always loved the parts when Nancy got to act like a real nurse near the end of the story! And I wanted a candy-striped dress and hat just like her!

Heidi

Heidi by Johanna Spyri

Oh, this story! I grew on this story. First I listened to the unabridged audio of it. Then my grandpa read it to me the Christmas I had the chickenpox. I loved the setting of the little home in the Alps. Heidi was so innocent and sweet! And the grandfather and Peter. I wanted to go up into the pastures with the goats. And if you like this story, you can read what happens to Heidi and Peter in Heidi Grows Up and Heidi’s Children. (These were written by the author’s translator.)

The Family God Gave

The Family God Gave by Esther Mae Witmer

I don’t know how many times I read and reread this book growing up. I’ve loved reading about adoption and fostering and this family does both. They don’t just adopt one or two children. And they don’t just adopt them from nearby and the children instantly become perfect fits into the family. Maybe I should go read it again.

Coon Tree Summer

Coon Tree Summer by Mary Landis

This story, and its sequel, Ice Slide Winter, were other books that I read and reread. I loved the large family, the fun they had together, the lessons learned, the work and study. It was just enjoyable to enter the world of these characters and visit for a while.

Are you ready to visit all the other Party Rooms–er, blogs? Have fun and don’t forget to leave comments, add books to your TBR list and enter the giveaway! Oh, and these will open in a new tab, so don’t worry, you won’t get lost in the acres of land around the Literary Lodge. πŸ™‚

Aw!!! I’ve read and LOVED all of these except Nancy Plays Nurse! Eloise Wilkin baby books are so fun and SO adorably illustrated – I own the Eloise Wilkin Treasury which contains baby’s birthday as well as a number of other baby stories, and I still love staring at the pictures… and I can quote the text. πŸ˜‰ The Family God Gave was another favorite of mine, especially since in my growing-up years my life goal was to have an orphanage in Mexico. πŸ™‚

Enjoyed this post! My childhood favorites would have to be the Lily Lapp and Grandma’s Attic series, as well as the stories from Wee Lambs and Rod & Staff Publishers. 😊 I recognize the two last books you shared!

I might have read a few of the Bobbsey Twins, but not many. The Honey Bunch books sound familiar but I don’t think I ever read them. I love the Golden Books! And Five Little Peppers is popular this party. πŸ™‚ And you liked a Christmas story! I love Christmas stories! πŸ˜€

    My review for today…

Hospital Sketches by Louisa May Alcott
5+ stars & 6/10 hearts. Oh my. I enjoyed this little book so much. It was really hilarious. Louisa May Alcott outdid herself this time. It was all so sarcastic and ridiculous, and yet, it was obvious that there was a foundation of truth and that Nurse Periwinkle was strongly based off Alcott! I don’t agree with everything in this story, but it’s full of sweet anecdotes and little lessons. Definitely a favourite book from one of my favourite authors!
