I wrote 60k words in one month. That was in March. I’ve never written that much in a month before and didn’t really think I could ever do it. I mean, that’s practically writing an entire novel in a month! That’s just crazy! But I did it.
And I learned some things.
{1}
That’s a LOT of words!
{2}
I can’t write that many words in one story. In order to write that many words I had to work on not just two stories or three, but I ended up working on a dozen different stories.
{3}
I had to give up some other things. I often found myself writing during one of my regular reading times, so I didn’t get nearly as much reading done as I had been doing. I also didn’t work on things like blog posts, much editing, or anything like that.
{4}
I had to have something to do that did not involve words. So I built a lego set.
{5}
Too many new words and not enough editing. Seriously, I had so many unedited sections of different stories that it was a little discouraging.
{6}
I think I got a bit burnt out. I tried to write shortly after that 60k, but I had to edit, and my brain was not creating new ideas or words. It wasn’t until the end up April that I felt like I was getting back into creative writing.
So, what do I think after writing 60k words in a month? It was exciting to do it once, but I don’t plan to do it again. I’d rather write fewer words and be able to keep writing the next month without having to stop and reread and edit so much. And I don’t like the feeling of wanting to write but having absolutely zero ideas. For a writer that is annoying.
Would you rather write a whole lot of words in a month and then have to edit them all and have zero ideas for writing anything? Or would you rather write fewer words in a month but be able to keep writing and working on your stories the next month?
