Have you ever gotten an e-copy of a book that wasn’t from Amazon and had to read it on your computer instead of your kindle or the kindle app on your other devise?
Have you ever gotten a pdf copy of a book to Beta read but the font was so small that you felt you would have to strain your eyes to read it on your kindle?
Have you ever wondered which format you should send your book to others in?
If you have answered yes to any of the above questions, this post is for you.
When I first got my kindle, I enjoyed getting to read some books from Amazon, but I had no idea how to read anything else that didn’t come from Amazon until someone told me. It’s very easy to read a pdf., a mobi, or other format on your kindle.
- Attach the file to an email.
- Send the email with nothing in the subject, to the email attached to your kindle. (It will look something like this: something@kindle.com)
- Now you can open your kindle and read it.
But wait!
If the pdf font is too small, then what?
Simply add one more step
- In the Subject line put: convert and it will be changed from a pdf. into a kindle book with a font that can be resized.
It’s as easy as that. Now no more having to try to read a book on my computer! Or trying to read the tiny print of some pdf. files.
Of the usual formats (pdf., mobi, and e-pub) I’ve only tried the first two on my kindle. Mobi works well, but I think I prefer the pdf because if the cover is attached, I can see it on my kindle. Yeah, I like having the covers. 🙂
If you are wondering what the email address for your kindle is going to look like, it will probably be whatever address you sign into your Amazon account with, only with @kindle.com on the end. You can also find it by looking at your account on Amazon.
And if you are sending a file to another person, a pdf. seems to be the easiest to read. And create. It is also quite versatile as it can be read on different devices and can be changed to a kindle book. But mobi is another good file to send too.

When I saw the title of the blog post in my inbox I got excited, because I knew you were about to give me a solution to what I thought was an unsolvable problem! =) Just a note–you have to either send it from your personal email associated with your Amazon account, or go to your Amazon account and add approved email addresses. If you don’t, you get an email from Amazon (sometimes quite a bit later) that tells you about it, and they won’t send it to Kindle. Now I can read the PDFs I’ve been neglecting. =) Now, in answer to the questions. =) I prefer to beta-read on the computer, because it’s easier to make notes that way, but if I’m just reading, Kindle/phone is definitely better than the computer. 😉 And for reading directly from authors? .mobi, but now that I know about the convert PDF is fine too.
