I must say, it was rather fun finding out the answers to all these questions. And discovering some other odd facts about my naming habits. Well, maybe they aren’t habits. Maybe they are just . . . quirks. But you are probably ready for the answers, aren’t you?
1.) Which letter of the alphabet have I used the most?
The most used letter for first names is J. Maybe that’s because there are more J names than any others.
Name Trivia: I have used the name Josh 6 times but never the name Joshua. (My sister asked what I had against Joshua.)
2.) Which of these boy’s names or variation of the name have I used the most?
The most used boy’s name or variation is Daniel/Dan/Danny. I’ve used it 14 times.
James/Jim/Jimmy was used 13 times.
Robert/Rob/Robby, Jackson/Jack, and David/Dave/Davie were all used 12 times.
Michael/Mike was used 11 times.
The name Jonathan/John/Johnny/Jon seems to be my go-to name when I need a name for some randomly mentioned person. I have used it 22 times.
3.) Which of these girl’s names or variation of the name have I used the most?
Mary was used more times than any other girl name. But again, it was like John. I don’t think I’ve ever had a main character named Mary. Perhaps if I did, I wouldn’t use it as a fill in so often. I’ve used it 15 times.
But Kate/Katie comes in a close second to Mary. I used it 10 times.
Hannah was used 9 times.
Lydia was used 8 times.
Leah and Alice were both used 7 times.
And Jenny/Jennie was used 6 times.
4.) Which of these letters have I used the least?
The least used letters of the alphabet probably come as no surprise to anyone. Poor X has never gotten to start a first name. (Or a last name that I can recall.) But the others . . .
Q started one name – Quentin
U started one name – Uriah, but I had two characters with that name, so I counted it twice.
Y started two names – Yury and Yang.
Z, much to my surprise, started 6 names.
5.) Do I have more Outlaws/bad guys, or more Law Enforcement officers?
Someone suggested I would have more Law Enforcement because I’d have the full departments, but I was talking about ones who were actually named. 🙂 But, lest you grow concerned, there are more Officers than Outlaws.
Name Trivia: Just in case you are curious, I’ve broken my list down for you.
Sheriffs – 10
Deputies – 12
FBI – 5
Police Chiefs – 3
Police Officers – 13
Border Patrol Agents – 2
Pinkerton Detectives – 3
Arizona Rangers – 1
That ought to keep the Outlaws in line, don’t you think?
6.) What Letter of the alphabet is most commonly used for a Doctor’s last name?
I wasn’t sure what to expect on this. I have 6 Doctors who have last names starting with M, and 4 that start with H.
7.) How many vowels have I used to start a minister’s last name?
Only two. A – Ardagh, and E – Evans. And only two last names that start with the same letter – B.
8.) Which 2 letters of the alphabet have I used the most to start last names?
The answer to this rather surprised me. I wasn’t expecting these two. The two most used letters to start last names have been S and B.
Name Trivia: I seem to use Smith as a go to last name for characters that are just mentioned.
9.) Which letter(s) have I not used to start any last names?
After alphabetizing my last names, I found out I had not used U or X to start any last names, and had only use Z and I once each.
10.) How many different last names have I used?
When I put those random numbers in, I had no idea how many last names I had used. Except I knew it was a lot. The total number is 581. Of course I don’t know how many of them are the same last name but used for different families.
And there you have it. My random quirks with names. Do you have any quirks when it comes to naming characters? Do you like simple names and normal spellings in stories you read? Or do you enjoy odd spellings and unusual names?

Hey, my random guesses weren’t too shabby! I must say, I much prefer borrowing real names from real life to making up my own. That way, they accurately represent real life, and it also removes my bias of names I don’t like as much. My current KDWC project has all-made-up names, and boy, was it time-consuming to come up with ones that I approved (some are probably still working names, because they must be absolutely *perfect*).

I get names from everywhere. 😀
Ah, you are one of those writers who must have “perfect” names, huh? I never have been one of those. Maybe that’s why I have so many of the same name. 😉

Ooo, cool! Lol, my older brother is named Joshua, but we always call him Josh XD.

I have a cousin named Joshua, but like your brother, we’ve always called him Josh. 😀
Lillian-Keith says
Lol, there you go! Maybe that’s why you lean more toward ‘Josh’ instead 🙂

I hadn’t thought of that, but maybe so! 🙂
