Dear Readers,
Here I am at camp. Actually, camp is officially over as of yesterday. Hard to believe. Now I’ll have to pack my things up and head back to normal life. But that’s later. Right now I’m writing to you to tell you how camp was.
In the first place, this was Jubilee July which meant that girls couldn’t pick their tent. They just got assigned. So my tent didn’t have my usual campers. I got to know some other girls, which was quite fun. It was quieter and we didn’t have a single pillow fight, but oh well. It was still good.
I started off with my usual goal of 20k words. I wasn’t sure what the month would be like, and I hadn’t been doing a whole lot of writing before camp started, so I decided not to do anything drastic.
Well, I reached the 20k in a short time and raised my goal to 25k. Reached that, raised it again to 30k, almost reached that and raised it to 40k. That I reached on the 20th, the day The Summit appeared. But I kept writing. And writing.
Some days were full of words! I even set a new record for myself of 6,360 words in a day! And that same week I wrote almost as many words as my first goal! I had a total of 19,224 words written that week! I know. Crazy. I ended up with over 57k words written!
I’ve learned a few things this camp.
- Don’t underestimate how much a little bit of encouragement can give.
- Little amounts add up.
- If you get stuck in your story, have a few of your characters figure out what’s for supper.
- You can row and write at the same time.
- Building lego sets are great for giving your brain a break from words.
My tent reached 100% of our tent goal, and had every single one of our tent mates participate! That was pretty fun. And then we tried for something that had never been done by any tent in any camp before. And that was to have every single person reach 100% of their goal! Ambitious sounding? Yep. but they worked hard. Did we reach it? No. But that was okay. It was fun to try.
And yesterday was the last official day of camp. Tent banners were handed out. Isn’t ours fun? And now we are chatting and visiting, swimming in the lake, and yes, some are still writing. We’ll pack things up, clean camp and head back to normal lives soon. Either tomorrow evening or Thursday morning. Then camp will be quiet until the aunties return in the fall to get ready for the November camp.
See you around!
