Welcome to the 5th Thursday of October and join me for an interview with author Sarah Holman. Sarah is the author of Kate’s Case Files series, the Tales of Taelis series, and other books and short stories.
Hi Sarah! I’m so glad you could join me to day. Please have a seat and let’s enjoy some hot drinks as we visit.
First off, could you tell my readers just a little bit about yourself?
I’m a daughter of the King of kings which is my greatest honor and privilege. I’m blessed to have lived all of the last twenty-eight years with my wonderful parents and share my home with five amazing siblings. My youngest sibling is nineteen, so our house is busy with all of us coming and going. We share a tight bond forged through our homeschooling years and the ups and downs of life. Right now, I divide my time between working as a home health aide, my writing, and my family.
Sounds like you have plenty to keep you busy. When you hear the word “October” what things come to mind?
Sadly, October always makes me think of praying for November. October is typically just a hard month for our family, and I dislike anything to do with Halloween. I’m grateful for Five Fall Favorites because it has helped me look forward to October more.
I share your dislike of Halloween, and am so glad you can do the Five Fall Favorites with us. I love finding new stories to read. Speaking of stories, I’m sure you have many ideas for stories. Have you ever had to deal with which story to work on first? How do you handle that situation?
Hahaha, this is a constant struggle. I get new ideas so often, and there is no way I can write all of them. Part of how I handle it is allowing myself to write the beginning of some of the stories that I’m excited about before getting back to my projects. Sometimes, I ride the wave of my excitement if a story won’t leave me alone. I know that God’s plans for my writing don’t always match my own.
Those are great suggestions, and some things that I do as well. Since it is fall, and the weather for most parts of the country is growing chilly, do you ever write outside? If so, where? If not, why not?
Oh yes. We have a little pond, and I often take hot tea and sit on a chair and type away. I love the sounds of nature and all the allergens that give me trouble leaving with the cooler air.
Oh, that sounds just lovely! What is the biggest distraction for you when you are writing? Social Media? Goodreads? Family members? Dreaming of chocolate? That book that you want to read? Your mind wandering to who-knows-where? Something else?
When I’m writing, I’m pretty focused. People can come in and start talking to me, and if they didn’t get my attention before they started talking, I won’t hear. I get into my stories easily, and I’m there. The only thing that pulls me out is if I need to research something. If I look something up, I often will be lost in research for an hour because I love learning as much as I love writing.
Wow! I have never been that lost in writing before! What book have you read recently that made you just read another page?
I’m reading Anna and the King of Siam right now with a friend. With all I have going, I don’t have a lot of reading time and wish I could read it all in one sitting. She was a strong Christian in a very not Christian culture. She persevered through a lot of challenges to teach the children and woman.
That sounds good. I’ll look forward to your review of it. Any last thing you want to share before you leave?
Remember that you are called to be the salt and light in this messed up and dark world. Don’t compromise!
