Sometimes you just need a quick read. One that is clean, fun, exciting, and satisfies the desire to get a book read. Enter Fast Food Books.
There’s nothing wrong with such books. I enjoy them, but sometimes too much of them is like eating too much fast food. It either gives you a stomach ache, or you start to crave only those things. You shouldn’t read only fast food books. You need meat and potatoes books. And yes, dessert books are fun too in moderation.
I came across some books that were fast food books. Code of the West by Stephen Bly
Were they clean? Yep. Well, there were some people getting shot and killed or at least wounded. There were dance hall girls, and some romance, but nothing descriptive.
Were they Christian? Sure. At least there were some prayers, and Bible reading and some verses here and there.
Were they exciting? Yeah. But it got a little old since there were always bad guys and Tap (MC) was always having to ride out after them. I had the impression that 85% of those who lived in the west were bad guys, 5% were women struggling to survive by whatever means they could, 5% were just average people doing the right thing, and 5% were lawmen.
Did I want to keep reading? Oh, sure. Until I’d read the third book. Then I was tired of all the drama and bad guys and everything. I don’t think I’ll read the rest of the series.
Is this all this author writes? Well, some of his other series felt like they had a little more meat too them. (Maybe they were chicken sandwiches.) But others are just fast food books. And I enjoy some of them there and there. I don’t want a steady diet of them, but when I want a book I know will be clean, have plenty of excitement (drama), be an easy read, and still have at least a nod to Christianity, I don’t mind picking one up to read.
Would I recommend them? Eh, maybe. This particular series I’m not sure I’d recommend to teen boys because of all the dance hall girls, but others by this author, sure.
Have you read any fast food books that were just fun but you wouldn’t want a steady diet of them? Do you enjoy books that are just fast and fun? Do you enjoy the deeper books? What is a fast food book you liked?
