Commemorating the End of the Great War

November 10, 2015 by readanotherpage 9 Comments

Did you know that tomorrow, what we now know as Veteran’s Day, marks the end of the first World War? The cease fire went into effect on the eleventh day of the eleventh month at the eleventh hour in 1918. It was the end of “the war to end all wars.” (Sadly, we know that less than 30 years later the world would again erupt in World War Two.)

In memory of that final cease fire of the Great War, I am offering my kindle book “Home Fires of the Great War” at a special price of $1.10 for eleven days.

(I would have made it $.11 but unfortunately I can’t make the price go that low.) That means that from now until the end of November 20th, this book will be on sale.

The Dedication of this book reads:

To all the families of our armed forces and to those who have fought in ever war, I dedicate this book with a grateful heart. Thank you all for your sacrifices.

Home Fires for the Great War was my first book. At the time I really had no serious thoughts about ever finishing and publishing it. I’m so glad I did.

All six years of researching and writing were worth it when I finally finished this story. But I cried when it ended. I had lived as close to these characters as though they were real and when it was time to say good-bye, I didn’t want to let them go. I felt like I was losing my friends.

If you have looked for a book about home life during World War One for your family, your children or you, take a peek of what awaits you within these pages.

• Written mostly in letter style between two cousins, this book covers the years from 1915-1919 in the U.S. and Canada.

• You will find true stories from those years about so much more than just the battles in Europe.

• From a ship on the west coast of the US, to the Zeppelin bombing of a small town in England.

• There is an hour-by-hour- report of a training camp in Kansas, and a description of the first gas attack on the front lines.

• You’ll read about Scotty Allan and his dogs, and Fred Hartman’s dog sled race in 1917. (His story inspired the movie “Iron Will”.)

• From tornadoes which ripped across Codell, Kansas, to the great explosion in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

• Family stories, day-to-day life, the tears and heartbreak of saying good-bye, the laughter of mischief and jokes, letters from the front, tid bits of news from actual newspapers . . .

• And don’t forget “Ted, Fred, Larry and Jim” and their antics!
And the list goes on.

My research included almost an entire bookcase of books as well as hours spent online, trips to the libraries here and in Kansas City. My collection of WWI books is quite large.

A long visit to the World War One museum in Kansas City left me with so many stories I wanted to tell. (Wow, I could easily spend several days there!) If I had included all the fascinating stories I wanted to tell, I’d probably still be writing the book.
My search for information even took the form of a trip to Codell, Kansas with my grandpa. Together we explored the small town one hot summer day.
There was no one there but a dog barking and a few grasshoppers. It was quiet and still. I couldn’t help but wonder who lived in the houses.
The Schoolhouse
Did they work in Plainville? Did anyone work in Codell anymore?
The tiny post office
Had it not been such a sultry day and had we not been pressed for time, I would have loved to explore Plainville as well. Maybe another time.

All the memories of my years of writing this book make me ready to pick it up and start reading again. Have you read “Home Fires of the Great War“? If not, now if the perfect time to start it. And don’t forget to say thank you to those who have and are defending our freedom!

Thanks for commenting, Jesseca. It was really fun to get to visit some of the places I was writing about. I would have loved to go to Nova Scotia as well, but . . . That was a little farther away. 🙂
