I’m in the midst of Camp NaNo, and I haven’t time to stop and write a real blog post. At least not one of the ones in my head. So you’ll have to settle for a book review.
Understood Betsy by Dorothy Canfield Fisher
Sheltered nine-year-old Elizabeth Ann has always heard her aunt Frances talk about “those horrid Putney, Vermont, cousins.” Now she is terrified. Aunt Frances can no longer take care of her, and Elizabeth Ann has been sent to stay with her New England relatives.
Rules at the comfortable New England farmhouse are relaxed. Aunt Abigail serves baked beans in the kitchen, Elizabeth Ann–now called Betsy–must wash her own bowl and spoon, and her relatives expect her to walk to her new school by herself. Worst of all, nobody seems to be the least bit worried about Betsy.

A delightful story from my childhood! I just love watching Elizabeth Ann change to Betsy, and the ending! I laughed, and smiled my way through this wonderful story. The characters are so well written that each one feels real and living even if they aren’t in the story more than a few sentences. The setting is perfect without too much to distract or too little to leave you floating around.
There are several euphemisms that I didn’t know of before, and one use of the Lord’s name when they weren’t praying. For this reason I took off half a star.
Highly recommended.

Understood Betsy! I love this happiness-filled book! And the Stag at Eve! *heart eyes* We actually read the whole poem about a year, so now we understand the parts in the book better.
