Do you feel like you just need to curl up with a blanket and do a little time traveling back to a small town in England? If that’s what you are feeling like, today’s book is for you.
The Christmas Hirelings by Mary Elizabeth Braddon
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
3.5 stars
I got this book because the idea of hiring children for Christmas to make the time more festive sounded fun. And the beginning caught my interested. Then the first two chapters were pretty much just backstory telling the reader all that had happened and I was beginning to wonder when we were going to get to the story. It did come and was sweet and fun. Yes, I suspected things correctly, and yes, I did feel that the ending was to be expected, but I still enjoyed it.
There is no mention of the real reason for Christmas, no forgiveness, no Savior.
Do you like stories that take place in other countries? What is one country you enjoy having stories set in? Are you a fan of older, slower paced stories?

I listened to this on audio, narrated by Richard Armitage, and enjoyed it a lot. It’s a sweet story, though I agree about the backstory being a little long.

Fun. I didn’t even think to see if it was on audio.
