This quote just reminds me that while some people seem to think or act like they know everything about writing, perhaps they don’t.
There are three rules for writing a novel. Unfortunately, no one knows what they are.
Somerset Maugham
So, just be careful if someone tells you that your story MUST have XYZ or should NEVER have QRS in it. There’s always a different opinion. But it’s also good to make sure you don’t just ignore every bit of advice.
What do you think the three rules for writing are? Do you tend to go your own way in writing or do you try to follow advice? Are you someone who feels obligated to listen to what “they” say in everything?

I tend to believe that there are different rules depending on what the writer’s purpose is. For example, there are some parts of the Bible that probably wouldn’t pass literary critique alone–but some things are more important than toeing the literary line. 😉

I liked this. 🙂 The three rules are probably are (or should be), 1. Honor God. 2. Write what YOU like. 3. Make sure the story makes sense. 😀
I have been tending to follow every bit of advice and writing with readers in mind. I’ve recently tried to start remembering that I am writing because I want to read them. I have to like them for myself. I actually began writing books because I was running out of good books to read so I decided to make my own. I want to make sure I always follow the Lord with what I write as well!

Yes, honoring God should be a must for writing. The second thing is important too. If you aren’t enjoying it, why are you writing it.
I think many writers these days say the same thing. “I couldn’t find what I wanted to read, so I decided to write it.”

Hmm, I can only think of two; Honor God, as someone mentioned earlier; and stay true to the story on your heart 🙂

Oh, I like those!
