A Book Series – Bret King

November 12, 2024 by readanotherpage 2 Comments

There are many book series. Some are more popular and others are not. I thought it would be fun to have a series about book series and share some of these with you all.

Bret King Mystery by Dan Scott

Overview:
This series focuses on Bret King, a teen growing up on a ranch in New Mexico with his family. His friends from town join him on the ranch and they solve mysteries together.

Main Characters and Relationships:
Bret is the oldest of three kids in the King house and has a great relationship with both his younger sister and brother as well as his parents. He is kind, thoughtful, helpful, and a hard worker. The youngest boy, Rusty, occasionally gets into mischief, but not often and the family relations are great. Bret is also a great friend, willing to help out and just be there for his friends. There is respect for the law and those who enforce it.

Pros and Cons:
Pros: Family relations are great. There are no murders in the stories even though there are some attempted murders or at least attempts at injuring someone. Nothing is overly descriptive. There is a friendship between a boy and a girl but it’s really nothing beyond that.
Cons: There are some times when you learn about the beliefs of some Navajos and some of Mexican decent. These are not portrayed as true as Bret doesn’t believe them, but they are shown anyway.

My Thoughts:
I love this series. The fun the boys have on the ranch, the excitement of the mysteries, and the great family relations just make the series one I return to many times. I love Bret, Jinx, Rusty, and all their friends. I also like that Mr. King is often involved or asked for advice about things. Aside from some beliefs that aren’t right and could easily be talked about, this series is clean.

How Many Books:
There are 9 books in this series. The first 3 aren’t hard to find used, but the rest of them are difficult to find.

Have you read this series before? If so, what did you think of it? Do you enjoy stories that take place on ranches? Do you like mystery books or are you more of a non-mystery reader?
