Sometimes when authors write, they slip in bits of their real life without even thinking about it. It just appears and it’s not until later that the author looks back and has to smile over the bit of real life that showed up.
Welcome to this year’s 5th Tuesday series! This year I’m going to take you with me into my world and reveal some real life things that have slipped into my books that perhaps you didn’t notice, or didn’t know were real life.
Let’s begin with twins. Yes, twins. If you were to take a look at all my stories, you might notice that there are over a dozen sets of twins.
- Home Fires of the Great War – Emma & Edmund, Frankie & Freddy, Rob & Will
- Through the Tunnel – Leigh & Lissa
- Hymns in the Hills – Zeke & Ez, Sade & Si
- By Paths Unknown – Addy & LeaLea
- Ria and the Gang – Jimmy & Johnny
- A Good Summer – Patrick & Kathleen
- Toothpaste Trouble – Jamie & Jerry
- The Way to Go – Clayton & Clifford
- Unto Him – Kelly & Kaylee
- Christmas Eve at the Backdoor – Ceddy & Cindy
- A Police Force for Christmas – Grace & Gabe
- WIP – Lawrence & Lenexa
You may think I’m like some others who include twins because they think they are so neat and fun, and all that. If so, you’d be wrong. It’s not that I don’t think twins are all those things, but in real life, I grew up with twins as my best friends. I personally know several others who are twins, and have attended church with at least 8 different sets or half sets of twins (not counting my best friends), and so to me, twins are just normal. It’s a normal part of my life and so twins have wound up in my stories more than I realized. And yes, they will probably continue to slip in. Why not? It’s life.
What about you? Do you personally know any twins? Are you a twin? Have you found any bits of your real life winding up in your stories?

I have added twins to several of my stories. It’s just so fun to put twins in stories!

Yep, twins are fun. 🙂

That is fascinating, and actually quite fun. For me, it’s the opposite–I try to stay away from twins in my writing, because my real life includes very few twins. I can think of two sets of twins in my entire family, which isn’t a large percentage in light of all the family history I know about. And as far as friends, there was a fellow homeschooling family with a set of twins, but I never thought it was very common, seeing as there are no sets of twins among my own siblings. XD Just goes to show how personal experiences really shape our perceptions.

That is interesting. I have one set of twins in my family history that I know about. But I think I’ve counted over a dozen sets of twins that I know or knew.

I used to add twins only to be able to add kids… I don’t know any twins so they’re basically just fantasy for me, haha!

Yep, sounds like what I used to do when I created families, but for me, it was more normal. (Except the number of twins I put in families. 😛 )

I love putting twins into my stories when I don’t think it’s too cliché. Usually, I try to base them off of a specific set of twins that I know. (I don’t know as many as you, but I still know a few.) Also I once worked with someone who was a quadruplet, so I’m sure there will be quadruplets showing up in one of my stories at some point. 😉
As for bit of real life winding up in my stories, YES!! That happens all the time! Usually, I do it on purpose, but there are times when something will slip in without my thinking about it. I love it when fictional stories have a bit of non-fiction to them! 🙂

Fun! Really? A quadruplet? How interesting.
Yes, real life is sometimes much more interesting than fiction. 🙂
