It’s the 5th Tuesday! That means you get to learn 5 more things about me. Since schools are all back in session, I decided now would be a good time to share about the teaching aspect of my life. Ready?
Welcome to the post where I share 5 things about me as a Writing Teacher!
I was teaching my “Essay” class
I’ll be honest, I had to think a bit to come up with these 5 things about me as a writing teacher. Teaching is something that I enjoy, and I’m honored that parents would entrust their children’s writing education to me.
1. 10 Years – It’s a bit hard for me to believe, but I’ve been teaching writing classes (I’m trained and got certified using IEW) for ten years! I still remember that first class of five students I taught. I was nervous, but it turned out to be so much fun!
2. Creative – You may have already guessed this, but I love to get creative about classes! One year for a class I had my students pretend they were traveling on a train trip and they had to write about what they had seen. Another time some students needed a little help with a creative writing project, so we acted the story out in the class room. Who says you can’t have fun while doing school? 🙂
3. No-Nonsense – When it comes to turning in papers, and completing assignments, I am a no-nonsense teacher. If you don’t follow the simple checklist you were given, you don’t get a good grade. And you might have to do it over again. And any excuses about not having enough time to complete an assignment have to come from a parent or I will ignore it.
4. 29 Students – Yep, I’ve had 29 students in these 10 years. I was offered a job of teaching writing for a homeschool group, but I turned it down. However, I did take a 3 days job of teaching writing for the same group during a summer thing they were doing. I had 30 students all day for 3 days. It was crazy! It was kind of fun, and I was exhausted each night! (But I impressed the instructor who said she’d never seen that large of a class be that quiet!) So, I guess I’ve actually had 59 students. 😉
5. When and Where – My first class was taught at a friend’s house (her younger brother and sister, sister-in-law, and two friends were my students), but the rest have all been at my house. (Except for those 30 students.) For several years I taught in the afternoons, but that changed a few years ago. Now classes start at 9:30 and last until almost noon. On Tuesdays. That has seemed to work really well as I’m not so tired in the evenings and can actually write.

I’ve taught VBS and Junior Church a couple of times, taught history for our homeschool and am currently mentoring a young writer.
I think I would enjoy you as a teacher. I’m not great a deadlines though, not because of procrastination, but because of ministry flexibility. (As a few of my poor beta projects just experienced…but I’m caught up!)

I understand trouble with deadlines in writing! Especially when you have other things going on. 🙂

That sounds fun!! I don’t think I’m a good teacher because I have very little patience. I think you might make a good teacher for me because I tend to procrastinate a lot. But I’m very much of a rule-follower and always anxious to make sure I’m doing exactly what I’m supposed to do. 😉

Hey, being a rule follower would work really well in my classes! You’d probably be getting straight A’s and maybe even A+. 😀

Thanks for the glimpse of your writing teacher life! Sounds exciting;) I’m a PROcrastinator hehe, however, I love to learn and follow directions so I think I’d do dandy in your class:)

🙂 I think you’d do well in my class, Amy, even if you do procrastinate. 😉

This was so fun!! I think it’s so neat that you teach writing. The closest thing I’ve done to teaching was at camp earlier this year…but seriously, I just read the lesson and let the other teens do the application questions and things. Teaching is so not my strong point. 😂

I enjoy it. It can be intimidating at first, but it gets easier. 😉
