It’s the 5th Tuesday! That means you get to learn 5 more things about me. I was debating which kind of thing I wanted to share about today, but decided I’d share something that most of you don’t know about me. You might know I’m an aunt, but what sort of an aunt am I?
Welcome to the post where I share 5Β things about me as an AUNT!
I’m about to reveal some of the things that I do as an aunt to seven wonderful nieces and nephews. (The above picture is missing my little curly, red-headed niece, who is four-almost-five βher birthday is in January. :))
1. I Pretendβ Ever since my oldest niece was little bitty, I’ve played pretend with them. We’ve eaten the food off the pages of books, created a spaceship and taken a trip to the moon, built a gold mine and gone through the tunnels in search of gold. We’ve headed west, played house, pretended all sorts of things, dressed up and acted out plays. In the picture above we were making Christmas cookies but it was warm and storming outsideβwe pretended it was a blizzard. π
2. I Get Sillyβ Come on, do your aunts put icing and a red hot on their noses and sing “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” with you when you make cookies? I thought not. I do. I tell jokes, talk in strange voices when cooking eggs for breakfast, make faces with my youngest nephew, and many times have had a niece or nephew say, “BehBeh, you’re funny!”
3. I Go On Adventuresβ Not the pretend kind where you stay safely in the yard and imagine. The kind where you go explore the neighborhood with the kids. We’ve walked down “new” streets, alleys, along the train tracks, down to the creek and even under the road. We’ve explored the “woods” nearby, and made friends with dogs. Those are adventures.
4. I Read and Tell Storiesβ Thankfully all my nieces and nephews (well, maybe not the youngest one yet) love to listen to or read stories. I’ve read books upon books to those kiddos. Sometimes the same ones over and over. Other times they pull out new ones. I’ve started reading longer chapter books aloud to them even though it takes us several months to get through a story. π And if they are spending the night, I’ll read them one of my short stories before bed. I also tell stories. Sometimes I put the kids in the story, other times I use their middle names instead. But it seems that no matter what kind of story I tell, it’s never long enough for them.
5. I Give Nicknamesβ Yep, I give nicknames. These nicknames aren’t just shortening a name, they are nicknames. I started out with Pickle Puss, then added Goof Ball, Funny Boy, Doodle Bug (who in turn called me Doodle Bug, which was fun), Buddy, Missy, and Buster. They in turn call me BehBeh. My oldest niece gave me that name when she was just learning to talk, and it’s stuck, and I love it! They also call me General because we play army quite often.

I’m still working on nicknaming all my nieces and nephews, but so far, I’ve got Goofy-Whoofus, Katie-Bug and Wonder Twin (we are both Gingers!) We enjoy catching bugs, running around outside, reading books and talking long into the night when we should be sleeping …and we love driving the adults crazy by singing Baby Shark. In fact, we love singing, even if everyone can’t get on key yet. My nickname is Ry-Ry, but if they can’t get my attention, they call me Red, lol!
Love this post!

So sweet! Sounds like you’re a wonderful auntie. <3 π I'm an only child so the closest I can get to being an aunt is with my cousin's young daughters. Unfortunately I haven't gotten to meet them in person yet because they live too far away and my dad's health problems make it so we only travel that far for funerals or if we were to get hit with such a bad hurricane we had to leave, neither of which have happened since 2009 or 2006 respectively, and the girls weren't born then. I do make and send them things for birthdays and Christmas though, and I hear they love my crochet toys so at least I can connect with them in some small ways.

That would be hard. But at least you can connect. I used to have to borrow other families little ones before my brother got married. π

I’m not an aunt (I’m the oldest kid, haha) but there’s a big age gap between me and my youngest brothers, so maybe that’s comparable! π My brothers have given me more nicknames than I’ve ever given them, and believe me, we play pretend! (I pretend all sorts of things. By myself. Just going about my day. And it rubs off.)

Ah, the wonderful world of pretend. π
Sure, younger siblings can compare, after a fashion. π
Ryana Lynn says
Same here! I probably pretend more alone than in a group!

I think I probably pretend more with others, especially younger ones, than alone. When I’m alone I have stories going through my head. π
kassieangle says
Well, that’s exactly the thing. When I’m alone said stories come to life π

Mine don’t. π They stay in my head.

Last time I helped watch nieces & nephews, we had an exceptionally silly time, and I was the silliest of all! (Which is a bit unusual for me, but it was still pretty hilarious. :D)
I also like to sing with them and read/tell stories. They’re not quite old enough for my “real” stories yet, but I make up mixed-up versions of the three bears and three little pigs, or I’ll have each of them pick something they want to have in the story, and then I have to somehow fit them all in. It gets a bit challenging at times, especially since some of them are quite the storytellers in their own right and have their own ideas on how the story should go! XD

Oh, yes, the joys of telling stories when the kids can tell stories too! I have a niece who reads all the time, but thankfully she doesn’t usually try to change my stories. My nephew, Doodle Bug, can tell some of the best stories, but he loves listening too. π
Sounds like you enjoy being an aunt too. π

I’m not an aunt. I’m only 13 and my sisters are two and four years younger than me π I do feel like an aunt to some of my tiny cousins, especially two little boys.
My sisters like playing pretend. I’ll join them, especially if they are playing horses outside or 1800s. I do love playing with model horses, and if my sisters are playing Play Mobiles, sure, I’ll play, too. My favorite thing to do with my sisters is goof off. Boy, can we get silly! They are amazing!
I always have a story going through my head though. And when I play with my sisters, I usually get fabulous ideas for books.

That’s a great way to get ideas for stories, Izzy! I had a lot of younger cousins too when I was younger and I loved playing with them. π
