5 Fall Favorites – Secondhand Favorites

September 26, 2023 by readanotherpage 24 Comments

It’s Day 2 of the Five Fall Favorites and today’s theme was difficult. Not because I didn’t have any books to share, but because I have SO many that I got from thrift stores. It really was hard to decide just which books I was going to share. I tried not to share any books I’ve already shared at the FFF before, but I might have missed one or two.

Are you ready to go shopping? There’s a thrift store just down the road. It’s the perfect length for a lovely walk while I share some of my favorite secondhand books with you. Perhaps you’ll be able to find your own copies!

Interrupted

After re-reading this story, I loved it just as much as I have before. Claire is sweet and a leader, but has to learn to rely on the Lord not on her own strength. Many good messages in this story and a vast array of characters though, since the story covers a year, only a few of the characters are a focal point.

Vinzi, A Story of the Swiss Alps

Any story by Johanna Spyri brings back memories of my grandpa reading her books to me. I don’t know how many we read but it was a lot. I enjoyed every one. Including this one. The setting, the characters. It’s all just lovely.

Silver Chief: Dog of the North

I have read and then reread parts of this book many times and enjoyed it all every time. Jim Thorne of the Northwest Mounted Police takes in a half wolf, half husky and they become the best of friends and companions. This has plenty of excitement, danger, and love between dog and man.

The Deepening Stream

I really like Neil. His personality isn’t cut and dried. He struggles with things real people struggle with such as why did this little event change his life so dramatically? Lissa is the kind of girl I think I’d like for a friend. She’s fun, passionate, works hard, loves with all her being, and yet struggles with doing what she knows she should do.

Winds of Allegiance

I had a hard time putting this book down. Since I’ve never done much studying about the Oregon territory before it was really settled, or about the intrigue between Russia, England, and America each trying to get a strong foothold in the land, I found myself wondering what was going to happen. The romance was clean and nothing that made me cringe. This was also a Christian aspect in the story with some prayer, Bible verses quoted, and some talk about finding your fulfillment not in who you are related to, but in Christ.

I hope you enjoyed our walk to the thrift story today. Hopefully you can find several books that catch your interest. Are you ready to head to some other blogs and find out what treasures they have found at thrift stores? Let’s run over to Kate’s blog and find someone else to visit.

Did you find any books to add to your TBR list? Have you read any of the books I shared? What is a favorite book you got at a thrift store? I’d love to know.

Such interesting recommendations! I love Linda Lee Chaikin, since reading another series, and the first book in the Great Northwest series I’m hoping to find time to read.

I rarely (read: almost never) go thrift shopping for myself, but this Summer I went to a thrift store and found a large collection of those beautiful hardback Reminisce Books. I limited myself to two, but I am very happy I found them. 😉

I love Interrupted…and every other Pansy book. I’ve sadly never run across any at a thrift store tho. But I have a good many reprints and read and listen to tons of them on kindle, LivriVox etc. She’s my favorite author EVER!
Also love Francena Arnold! I’m pretty sure I read Deepening Stream, but now i need to go back and check. The first of her books that I read was A Brother Beloved. I ran across it at a secondhand place and got it because several years ago you had recommended Fruit for Tomorrow on FFF and I wanted to read it but had never found it. So I figured she must be good:) Then I read Not My Will! And wow!! That book…
Anyway, sorry for rambling on and on, but thanks for today’s suggestions!!

And thanks for the lovely comment!

I haven’t read any of these books. I think I need to 😛
Second hand bookstores are the best… 80% of the books on my shelves come from them so I don’t know I could pick a favourite. 😆

Silver Chief sounds like a book I would have adored around the time that I read White Fang and Call of the Wild – I’m surprised I haven’t heard of it before.

Ooo, I like the selection in your thrift store! I haven’t read a lot of older books, though my sister recently got a Cherry Ames book at a book sale. Have you read that series before?

I haven’t read Vinzi, but I do love Johanna Spyri’s writing! And that’s really special that you have memories of your grandpa reading her books to you. Silver Chief sounds like a very interesting read! I like Mountie stories (though I don’t know if I’ve ever read any books with a Mountie MC, only heard audio drama), and the dogs are one of the best parts.

Challenge of the Yukon? Yes, we’ve listened to many an episode of that! We had one much-loved episode when I was younger, then we found them online later and listened to a lot of them. Sgt. Preston and King are great!
