Top 5, Giveaway & Blog Hop – World Fiction

October 1, 2019 by readanotherpage 27 Comments

Welcome back to the Literary Lodge!

I’m so glad you’ve returned for another full day! Today is warmer than yesterday so I don’t know if we’ll need blankets until this evening, but feel free to take one if you want. Sometimes it’s fun to just curl up with a good book and read. A few more bushels of apples were brought in to the kitchen yesterday, so we are going to be drying apples today and making cider, if you want to come and try some you are more than welcome. I think the bonfire is already started, and someone mentioned taking a row on the lake in one of the boats. Feel free to hike over to the barn if you’d like, or find one of the benches to sit and enjoy your stack of books. Yes, of course you may use a backpack! Here, will this one work? You’re most welcome. Do you want to ride one of the bikes? If so, there are some parked along the side of the lodge. I have a feeling this is going to be a busy place today, so I’m glad the sun is shining and it’s a bit warmer. There are so many books to read and places to visit! Come on, let’s get started!

If you haven’t been here before, the giveaway is down below, and so are the buttons to the other party rooms. Be sure to visit them all as there are some great books being recommended, and one of them is offering a FREE kindle book!

Just a reminder, if we reach 75 people entered into the giveaway, we’ll add a 2nd place winner, so be sure to invite your friends!

World Fiction

World fiction is such a fun genre but so hard to narrow my choices down to just 5 books! I love books that take me to far away places where I can make new friends and learn new things. These are just a few of the books I’ve enjoyed that take place in other countries.

On the Edge of the Fjord

On the Edge of the Fjord by Alta Halverson Seymour

I love this author and her books, and this book was no exception! It takes place during WWII and deals with Nazis, spies, and those who fought in the underground in Norway. Usually when I think of the 2nd World War, I think England, France, Germany, and Japan, not Norway, so this was an added delight.

Around the World in Eighty Days (Extraordinary Voyages, #11)

Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne

This story is such a delight. I grew up listening to the unabridged audio of it long before I would have attempted to read it myself. And I still love listening to it. The characters are just such fun! Phileas Fogg is calm and cool even when it appears his wager is over. As for Passepartout, well, you should just read it.

Scramble! (Tales of the RAF, #1)

Tales of the RAF series by Don Patterson

This series is kind of written and formatted along the same lines as the American Girl books. Written for younger readers, with many illustrations and even a section in the back with real information about what was going on, these books are fun for any age. I greatly enjoyed the series. It takes place in England.

White Stallion of Lipizza

White Stallion of Lipizza by Marguerite Henry

If you’ve ever seen the Disney movie “Miracle of the White Stallions,” or seen the horses perform like my grandma & I did years ago, this book will tell you even more about the horses and the famous riding school of Vienna. There are wonderful illustrations in the book and the story is delightful. It made me want to travel to Austria.

The Scotch Twins

The Scotch Twins by Lucy Fitch Perkins

I love all the “twin” books that I’ve read. But this one is one of the few that was written for a bit older reading level. It’s longer and has more story to it. The characters are delightful and there is a bit of excitement and fun.

Are you ready to visit all the other Party Rooms–er, blogs? Have fun and don’t forget to leave comments, add books to your TBR list and enter the giveaway! Oh, and these will open in a new tab, so don’t worry, you won’t get lost in the acres of land around the Literary Lodge. πŸ™‚

Today’s review…. because amazon takes forever to process my reviews…

Rainbow Valley by Lucy Maud Montgomery
5+ stars & 8/10 hearts. This is such a lovely book. It just makes you so *happy.* The characters are all so real and loveable (or not!) and humorous and… *living.* The scenes are so interesting and funny and beautiful and sad… Oh, how those last paragraphs make me sad! There are a couple euphemisms; mentions of ghosts; and I don’t agree with everything. But it’s a wonderful book. Anne of Ingleside starts foreshadowing; then this one reminds poignantly of what’s coming up… and oh, you both dread and want to read Rilla!

Yay! Day Two! I’ve seen a couple books that sound really interesting already. I don’t technically have a TBR list, but I think I’m going to have to make one, so I don’t forget about these!

Same here. There are a few books I mark as TBR on Goodreads, but most are books that just haven’t been published yet and I know I’ll read them. But . . . There are so many books!

Tales of the RAF!! I read through the whole series multiple times in a row when I was like 15…not exactly the target audience, but they’re such fun stories and I love the RAF! Dawson’s Down was my favorite.

I can see that it might be harder to read it than it would be to listen to the audio of it. πŸ™‚
And yes, you should read more of the Twin books. I think you’d enjoy them.
