Welcome to the 3rd day at the Literary Lodge! And the 3rd day of our Five Fall Favorites party!
This year seems to be giving us beautiful weather! The nights are chilly and perfect for gathering around the bonfires with blankets to talk about our favorite stories. During the day, however, the sun has been out and today doesn’t appear to be any different. The bikes are waiting to be taken for a spin out the dirt road or along the trials. Someone left some books on one of the benches yesterday so if that was you, please make sure you pick them up at the barn. Do you need a bushel basket yet? If you think a backpack will do, there are still a few unused ones on the porch. Help yourself. The boats are tied up just waiting for you to take them out on the lake. You should have seen the lake early this morning! It was like a mirror! But anyway, have fun and enjoy the day here at the Literary Lodge!
Don’t forget that we’ll give away more prizes if we have more people entered! Tell you friends about the party. And if you’re new, the buttons to take you to the other party rooms/blogs, are down below. Happy collecting of new stories!
Read-Aloud
I don’t know about you, but I’ve always loved listening to books being read aloud. My siblings and I grew up listening to audio books when we traveled, or my mom reading aloud to us at home. Perhaps part of the reason I enjoy read-aloud books so much is because I’m an auditory learner, and when I listen to something, it sticks. Now that I have nieces and nephews, I enjoy reading aloud to them. Here are just few of many great books to read aloud.
Rainbow Garden by Patricia M. St. John
It was really hard to decide which of the books by this author I was going to share, but I decided on this one. I just love the story. The setting and characters are so real. It is just a story that is encouraging, exciting, and enjoyable all at once.
All-of-a-Kind Family by Sydney Taylor
Reading about a Jewish-American family living in New York in the early part of the 1900s is pure delight. Especially since it’s a family with five girls. Each one is different, from Ella, the oldest, down to Gertie who is too young to attend school. And best of all, the girls love to check out books from the library!
Eight Cousins by Louisa May Alcott
This is a book I grew up listening to my mom read aloud to my siblings and me. And I always sort of wished I could have that many cousins around to play with. Rose’s adventures delighted me then, and they still do now.
Hans Brinker or the Silver Skates by Mary Mapes Dodge
Another book my mom read aloud when I was younger. I remember being a little frightened by the father, but the skating on the canals and the ending made everything good. It’s just a great story and full of life in Holland.
Man of the House by Isabella Alden (Pansy)
I managed to get in another book in by my favorite author! This story is one for boys or girls. It’s great for families to read together, or for someone to read to themselves. It’s the story of one boy who is left as the man of the house after his father’s death. With the help of a new neighbor, he does what is right with surprising consequences.
Enjoy your visits to the other blogs/rooms. But don’t forget to comment below, enter the giveaway, and add more books to that tottering to-be-read stack. 🙂

My review of the day: “Choices for Max” by Rebekah A. Morris:
4 stars. This was such a sweet little read. Max and Marcia’s interactions were so sweet. I loved Uncle Eli and Aunt Betsy, and Mr. Burton was really nice. 🙂 The feeling of the book was like the ’40s and just perfect. I didn’t like the cover at first, but now I think it’s just right for this little story. It’s not very long, but it is good. I have my favourite version of Max’s story, and I love it. ^_^
A Favourite Quote: “You knew Uncle Eli too?” […] This day was getting more exciting by the minute. “But Uncle Eli didn’t play ball.”
“No, he didn’t,” Mr. Burton chuckled. “But I didn’t live in the ball parks.[”]

Hi Rosalyn!
Yes, the days are marching on quickly. But I hope you are finding books to add to your to-read shelf. (Not that you didn’t have anything you wanted to read before . . .) 😉
Rosalyn R. says
Haha, yes, I am! 😉
readanotherpage says
😀 Good! I’d hate for you to leave at the end and not have any new stories to want to read.
Rosalyn R. says
:p I think I’ll have a lot to read at the end!

😉 Me too!

Man of the House was so good! Anything by Isabella Alden is awesome. The Moody Family series by Sarah Maxwell are good read alouds. But my favorite is Anne of Green Gables! My sister read it to us on a road trip to West Virginia, and see even did the voices according to the movie version! A.Ma.Zing!

In complete agreement about Isabella Alden’s books. 😉 I was considering putting the Moody Family series in my list, but I had shared it last year, so I thought I’d pick some different ones.
Wow! Your sister must be a talented reader! Has she ever read anything for Librivox?
Kaitlyn K. says
*shakes head sadly* I’ve never read any of these! So sad!
readanotherpage says
Oh, dear, I think it’s time you changed this sad fact, don’t you?

I loved Eight Cousins and Hans Brinker! I want to read the sequel to Eight Cousins, but unfortunately it’s not on our shelf. :/

I like the sequel, but not as much as Eight Cousins.

Oh, I love ‘Eight Cousins’! I first read it at a time when I actually did have 7 boy cousins! Thankfully, I have two sweet girl cousins now as well ❤️

Oh, how fun is that! 🙂

“All-of-a Kind Family” is one of the books on my list for today!

That’s so fun! I’m heading to your post soon. 🙂

Eight Cousins has been on my TBR for quite some time. Looks so darling. 😀

You should read it! Or you could probably get it on Librivox to listen to. 🙂
Brooklyne says
I haven’t heard of these before, but they look good! 🙂

Really? How fun to be able to introduce you to new books. 🙂

My second book review: I just got done reading Chasing Mona Lisa by Tricia Goyer and Mike Yorkey. This book was really good! Very exciting and full of suspense! I loved reading this book, although the first book in the series (The Swiss Courier) was my favorite. I really like the main character Gabi, although I would have loved to see more of the book centered around her than on some of the other characters. The only thing I disliked about this book was that it was a bit confusing, but other than that, it was great! 4 1/2 stars! 🙂

“All-of-a-Kind Family” sounds fun! I just bought that book at a library book sale. I hope to read it fairly soon! 🙂
readanotherpage says
Oh, that’s great! I hope you enjoy it!
Lauren Compton says
Thanks for organising this party, Rebekah! I’m enjoying your fun posts and the book recommendations. I think my younger brother would enjoy Man of the House, so I’ve added it to my to read list. Now I have to try to find somewhere I can buy it in Australia!
readanotherpage says
Glad you added it. Hmm, that might be tricky. You might be able to find a kindle copy on Amazon. Or perhaps even a paper copy, but I don’t know what the shipping would be if it was from the US. I hope you can find a copy!

You’ve got one of my favorite authors up there–Patricia St. John! Her stories were so realistic, and you could tell she loved people. Have you read her autobiography? It’s really good. =)
I’ve also read Eight Cousins (used to be an absolute favorite of mine growing up. Googlamps was my favorite, after Charlie =P) It took me several tries when I was much younger to get through Hans Brinker, probably because I was a bit young. But I enjoyed it once I finished it.
Both All-of-a-Kind Family and Man of the House made it to my TBR list. =)
Thanks for the fun!

No, I haven’t read that autobiography! That sounds really interesting though. I’ll have to see if I can find it.
Yay for adding more books to your list! 😀
